Description
The Kissing Sailor Statue, also known as "Unconditional Surrender" or "Embracing Peace" Statue is located in Tuna Harbor Park, San Diego. It is a replica of the famous photograph of a sailor kissing a woman in New York's Times Square --in 1945, celebrating the end of the war with Japan. The 25 foot high statue sits across the inlet from the famous US aircraft carrier USS Midway --now a museum.
A photograph of a sculpture based on a photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt that was taken on V-J day on Times Square NY on August 14, 1945.

Hi Louis...I missed this when I last visited your site. Love the woman sitting on the "nurses's" heel...give great perspective to the height of this statue. By the Way, there are a few versions of this statue around the country...the one you have here is still in Sarasota Bay Front. It was spray painted either late last year or early 2020 and there were some attempts at getting it removed from the Bayfront....but in September it was announced it would stay in its current position. I don't know if the sculptor was the same, but certainly the one in San Diego looks very much like this one in Sarasota. Congrats on it being featured in the Images That Excite group...

One of my favorite photos. Where is this sculpture at?
Louis Dallara replied:
This was taken back in 2006 in Sarasota Florida, the statue has been moved and I don't know the present location. Maybe if Google it, you can fins the present location, thanks for the nice comments
